Loire Valley World Heritage - administrative map

The UNESCO inscription specifically concerns the Loire Valley and the area generally situated between the two hillsides framing it, from Sully-sur-Loire (45) to Chalonnes-sur-Loire (49), along 300 km and covering a surface area of 860 km².

The area encompasses:  

  • 2 regions (Centre-Val de Loire, Pays de la Loire)
  • 4 départements (Loiret, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire)
  • 18 inter-municipalities, including those around the cities of Orléans, Blois, Tours, Chinon, Saumur and Angers.
  • 11 countries
  • 1 regional nature park (PNR Loire-Anjou-Touraine)
  • 1 national nature reserve (Saint-Mesmin, in Loiret)
  • 155 municipalities.

It is home to almost 900,000 residents.
