Loire Valley World Heritage WebGIS

As part of a partnership with the Observatoire de l'économie et des territoires, Mission Val de Loire has developed a webGIS, a web-based geographic information system where geographic data can be collated, for the purposes of informing the Mission’s research and publications. The Mission’s partners (local authorities, schools and universities for example) can access this tool by request.

There are 155 municipalities across the Loire Valley UNESCO territory, organised into 18 intermunicipal authorities (EPCIs). The large cities and urban areas have sound technical project development capabilities in place, but the smaller EPCIs and municipalities often don't have the internal resources for identifying, analysing and carrying out assessments with respect to the issues specifically associated with the UNESCO site.

In 2020, Mission Val de Loire wanted to obtain analytical tools for the UNESCO territory which could collate data and provide regularly updated thematic atlases for the attention of project leaders and local authorities. In that way, Mission Val de Loire is continuing to shore up knowledge of the territory by promoting a cross-disciplinary approach (heritage, landscape, environment, urban planning, etc.). The aim is to more effectively assess the issues specific to the UNESCO site, before projects are implemented.

Development of a web-based geographic information system (webGIS) is a tremendous opportunity for jointly building thematic knowledge: by providing access to the production of thematic layers, this webGIS becomes a tool that can be accessed by Mission Val de Loire’s partners.

Objectives

  • Have access to a tool for analysing the territory’s landscape and heritage dimensions;
  • Provide Mission Val de Loire partners with comprehensive or thematic mapping of the UNESCO territory;
  • Contribute to the publications initiated by Mission Val de Loire (atlas: mapping, statistics and analyses);
  • Inform studies prior to projects;
  • Provide schools and universities with a knowledge resource about the territory;
  • Enable the “Campus” projects to produce and expand databases.
